Political: Spin Doctors Rule These Days and Does Truth Even Exist?

Submitted by Michael Cruse on October 15, 2008 – 6:44 am3 Comments

This is not a political blog and I do not wish to make it one. That being said, what interests me in all the recent back-in-forth amongst of the candidates is the spin and how easy people believe what they are told. When did humanity turn their brains off?

The below quote is from one of my favorite authors, Terry Goodkind, and is very appropriate in today’s world.

“People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it’s true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool.”

I try to keep this in mind as I read and listen to the news. How much of what is being said is really true or factual? I have no idea any more.  Everyone blames everyone else for the world’s problems, and says that so-in-so did, or did not, do something.  They argue voting records and spin their actions to ad nauseam.

Is their a purveyor of truth these days or is the public at lost in a sea of spin and slick marketing?

  • nukeit says:

People aren’t stupid, they just don’t exercise their free will. Free will is controlled by marketing and media bias abuses. Their abuses cause stupidity. Ignorance is as important to our government as anything, important enough to outsource the spread of corrupt agenda to any media outlet willing to soil their name for a dollar.

I believe that our founding fathers intended for us to use the free will based laws to learn and grow and break out from the restrictions imposed by ancient government methods that kept us back as a species for far too long.

  • I enjoyed your post. One of the things I most dislike about election year is all the spin but the stakes are high for each candidate and I can understand using spin and rhetoric.
I agree with your previous poster that we are not stupid but perhaps we are rushed and we grab our news here and there from sound bites and highlighted articles.
It takes time to research and separate the truth from the spin.
Thanks for giving us an insightful post and something to think about as we are bombarded with spin today.
